The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is a compact retrofit lock with Wi-Fi built in, so it needs no bridge. It replaces the inside thumb turn of your deadbolt and keeps your keys. Home Assistant controls it through the August cloud or locally over Bluetooth.
Mounts over the inside of an existing single-cylinder deadbolt, so the outside of the door and the keys stay the same. That makes it a good fit for renters and for doors with matched hardware. The built-in DoorSense sensor reports whether the door is open or closed once it is calibrated in the August app.
The August integration goes through the August cloud and shows the lock, door state, battery and who last operated it. For local control, add the Yale Access Bluetooth integration: the August integration hands it the lock’s offline key, and an ESPHome Bluetooth proxy near the door keeps the connection reliable. The battery reading is often inaccurate, so do not rely on it for low-battery alerts.
We do not recommend it for new installs: a Matter lock such as the Level Bolt gives local control without the Bluetooth setup.
Recipes using this device
Auto Lock at Night
Installs a Home Assistant automation that locks your smart locks at a set time every night. Add door sensors and it holds off while a door is still open, then locks the moment the last one is shut.
Unlock on Arrival
Installs a Home Assistant automation that unlocks the door when you get home, and only when the house was locked, so you are not fishing for keys with an armful of shopping. Add lights and it welcomes you into a lit hallway after dark.
