The Hue Bridge is the Zigbee hub Hue lights and accessories pair to, and what the hue integration in Home Assistant talks to over Ethernet. Hue Zigbee lights can also skip it and pair straight to a Zigbee coordinator.

Setup guides
Model BSB002, the square second-generation bridge. Ethernet only, no Wi-Fi. The hue integration discovers it on the LAN and pairs by pressing the round link button, then runs on the local CLIP API v2 event stream, so state arrives as push rather than polling. Holds around 50 lights and 12 accessories. It also bridges its lights to Matter controllers, which is a second way out of the same box, not a replacement for the hue integration. The bridge is optional for the Hue Zigbee lights and accessories, which are Zigbee 3.0 and pair directly to a ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT coordinator: that drops the extra box and the Hue app, but also drops entertainment zones, Hue scenes, and firmware updates through Signify. It is not optional for the rest of the Hue range, and Hue Secure cameras and the Play HDMI Sync Box are not Zigbee devices at all. Specify the bridge when the client wants the Hue app alongside Home Assistant, or when the lights were installed on it already.
