Insteon

Insteon is a dual-band home automation protocol. Its dual-band devices send every command over both the powerline and a sub-GHz RF mesh, so if one path is blocked the other still carries the signal. Home Assistant talks to an Insteon network locally through a Hub or PLM modem, with no cloud required.

Brands on this protocol

Insteon is a proprietary protocol. Its dual-band devices carry the same message on two physical layers at the same time, the home’s electrical wiring (powerline) and a sub-GHz RF signal (around 915 MHz in North America). Not every device is dual-band: battery sensors and remotes transmit over RF only, and older single-band hardware uses one medium alone. Every mains-powered dual-band device also repeats traffic. The mesh grows more reliable as more dual-band devices are added.

Strengths

  • Dual-band redundancy. On dual-band devices, commands travel over both powerline and RF. A device that cannot be reached one way is usually reached the other, which routes around noisy circuits and dead spots. RF-only battery devices and single-band legacy hardware do not get this failover.
  • Simulcast mesh. Every dual-band device repeats messages, and the network uses timed simulcasting rather than per-hop routing tables. Latency stays low and setup stays simple.
  • Local control. Home Assistant drives Insteon entirely on the local network through a Hub or PLM modem, with no cloud dependency.

Trade-offs

  • Single vendor. Insteon is a closed, single-manufacturer ecosystem with no cross-brand device market.
  • Legacy status. SmartLabs discontinued Insteon in 2022. The revived company sells a limited catalog, and much hardware is only available secondary-market.
  • Battery devices are RF-only. Sensors and remotes transmit over RF alone and need a mains-powered dual-band Insteon device within range to bridge them onto the powerline.

Integration on Insteon

Home Assistant uses the Insteon integration, which connects either to an Insteon Hub (model 2245-222) over the LAN or to a PLM PowerLinc Modem (2413U USB or 2413S serial) attached to the Home Assistant host. Devices must be linked into the modem’s all-link database before they appear in Home Assistant. The optional Insteon cloud subscription is only needed for the mobile apps and remote access, not for local Home Assistant control.
