Apple Home Hub
An Apple Home hub is the always-on Apple device that runs a HomeKit home when nobody is looking: automations, remote access, and the Thread border router that Matter accessories join. HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV are the only devices that fill the role.
An Apple Home hub is what turns an iPhone-only HomeKit setup into a home that keeps running with the phone in a pocket. Without a hub, Apple Home automations only fire while an iPhone is on the local network and nothing is reachable from outside the house. With one, HomeKit automations execute locally, family sharing and remote access work, and, on Thread-capable models, the hub doubles as the border router that Matter and Thread accessories join.
Any HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV on the network is promoted to hub automatically; the newest capable device becomes the primary and the others stand by. Home Assistant does not manage the hub or see its HomeKit side, which is exactly why the role matters on a job site: it is infrastructure that lives next to Home Assistant rather than inside it.

The full-size HomePod (2nd generation) is a Siri speaker that doubles as infrastructure: an always-on Apple Home hub and a Thread border router. Home Assistant reaches it over AirPlay through the local apple_tv integration, so it is an announcement and multiroom audio target rather than a fully controllable player.
HomePod mini
The HomePod mini is the cheapest way to put an Apple Home hub and a Thread border router in a room. Home Assistant sees it over AirPlay through the local apple_tv integration as a media_player for announcements and multiroom audio.
