A contact sensor is a small two-piece magnet-and-reed device that reports whether two surfaces are touching. Doors, windows, drawers, and cabinets are the typical targets.
Contact sensors are the simplest and most reliable building block for openings detection. The reed switch reports an open state the moment the two pieces separate, so battery life is excellent and false positives are rare.
