A media player is any device Home Assistant controls through a media_player entity: a TV, a streaming box, or a networked speaker, soundbar, or streaming amplifier. It reports playback state and accepts power, volume, source, and app commands, all over the local network.
The media_player entity is Home Assistant’s common contract for anything that plays content. Whatever the brand
integration behind it, the entity exposes the same surface: power on and off, volume and mute, source and app
selection, and playback state. That state, whether playing, paused, or idle, is as valuable as the controls, because it
tells the rest of the home what the room is doing right now.
