Toothbrush

A connected toothbrush in this role reports brushing sessions, session length, mode, and battery to Home Assistant over Bluetooth, so automations can tell whether the household actually brushed today.

A connected toothbrush is a pure sensor: nothing about it is controllable, and everything it is useful for comes from what it reports. Home Assistant sees whether the brush is running, how long the current or last session lasted, which mode it is in, the sector the brush thinks it is cleaning, and the battery level. Oral-B brushes are supported by the built-in Oral-B integration, and Philips Sonicare, Xiaomi, and Laifen brushes are covered by community integrations that expose the same shape of data.

How Selora AI uses toothbrushes

  • Brushing checks that notice a morning or evening brush that never happened and say so, rather than leaving parents to ask and be told “yes” every time.
  • Habit tracking for children, where the useful signal is a session that lasted the full two minutes, not that the brush was switched on for five seconds.
  • Bathroom scenes triggered by a session starting, such as raising the mirror light or starting a two minute song.
  • Battery reminders so a dead brush is charged before the morning it matters.

What installers should plan for

Everything here rides on Bluetooth, so the deciding factor is coverage, not the brush. A Home Assistant host in a cabinet two floors below the bathroom will see nothing. Plan for a Bluetooth proxy within a few metres of the sink, and remember that battery level in particular needs an active connection rather than a passive advertisement, so a proxy that only listens will report brushing but leave the battery stale.

Treat the data as a habit signal rather than an audit trail. A brush picked up and switched on without anyone’s teeth in front of it looks identical to a real session, and a session recorded while the proxy was offline is simply missing. Automations built on this should nudge, not accuse.
