The Trane XR524 (TZEMT524AA21MA) is a discontinued 24V touchscreen thermostat with a built-in Z-Wave radio, originally sold for Nexia Home Intelligence. It runs 2-stage heat and 1-stage cool, including heat pumps, and Home Assistant controls mode, setpoints, and fan locally through Z-Wave JS without a Nexia bridge or account.
Discontinued, and usually found already on the wall in homes that had a Nexia system. It pairs straight to a Z-Wave JS controller. The Nexia bridge is not needed, and neither is the cloud. Z-Wave JS identifies it as the Trane XR524 and exposes its installer settings (outdoor unit type, indoor heat stages, minimum run and off times, sensor offset) as configuration parameters.
It needs a 24VAC C-wire and has no batteries, so it is always powered and repeats Z-Wave traffic for the mesh. The built-in humidistat does not report humidity over Z-Wave, so plan a separate sensor if a recipe needs humidity.
Set the Schedule parameter to Hold so the thermostat’s 7-day program does not override setpoints from Home Assistant. For a new install, specify a current Z-Wave thermostat with S2 and SmartStart, such as the Honeywell T6 Pro Z-Wave.
