Pico Smart Remote (5-button, for dimmers)
Caséta devices pair with the Lutron Smart Bridge, not with Home Assistant. You add each dimmer, switch, remote, or sensor to the bridge in the Lutron app, then reload the Lutron Caséta integration so Home Assistant picks it up.
Use this guide after completing the Lutron Caséta Smart Bridge Setup .
Before You Start
Confirm the following before pairing devices:
- The Smart Bridge is set up in the Lutron app, and you are signed in to the account that owns it.
- The Lutron Caséta integration is installed in Home Assistant and the bridge shows as online.
- Wired devices are installed and powered. The breaker is on and the load (lights or fan) works.
Step 1: Put the Bridge in Add Device Mode
- Open the Lutron app and select the home that contains the bridge.
- Tap the Settings icon in the top left corner, then select Add Device.
- Choose the device type you are adding (for example, a dimmer, a switch, a Pico remote, or a sensor). For a Pico remote, also pick the image that matches your remote.
While the app is in Add Device mode, the devices already paired with the bridge blink. This is normal.
Step 2: Press the Pairing Button on the Device
Follow the prompt in the app. It shows the exact button for the model you selected. As a rule:
- Dimmers, switches, and fan controls: press and hold the Off button (the bottom of the paddle or the bottom button) for about 10 seconds, until the LED on the device blinks rapidly, then release it.
- Pico remotes: press and hold the bottom button for at least 10 seconds, until the LED on the remote starts blinking.
- Motion sensors: press and hold the button the app shows on the front of the sensor until the lens flashes.
Pair one device at a time. Every device needs to stay within about 9 m (30 ft) of the bridge, both for pairing and in daily use. Caséta dimmers and switches do not relay the signal, so only a Lutron repeater extends that range.
Step 3: Name the Device and Assign a Room
When the app detects the device, it asks for a room and a name. Use clear names such as “Kitchen Pendants” or “Hallway Pico”. Home Assistant imports these names, so naming the device here saves renaming it later.
For a Pico remote, the app then asks whether it controls lights or shades, and which ones. Tap I am done adding devices and wait for the app to finish programming (this can take a few minutes), then test the remote.
For a motion sensor, the app asks which lights it controls. These links run on the bridge and keep working even if Home Assistant is offline. If you want Selora AI to handle a Pico’s buttons instead, keep the app links to a minimum so a single press does not trigger both.
Step 4: Reload the Integration
Home Assistant reads the device list from the bridge when the integration starts. After adding devices in the Lutron app:
- Go to Settings > Devices & Services.
- Open Lutron Caséta.
- Open the menu (⋮) on the bridge entry and select Reload.
The new devices then appear under the integration:
- Dimmers become lights, switches become switches, and fan controls become fans.
- Motion sensors feed an occupancy sensor for their room. Several sensors in the same room share one occupancy sensor.
- Pico remotes expose a device trigger for each button. Use these triggers to start an automation or a scene when someone presses a button.
Pico remotes also get button entities, which are usually disabled by default. Pressing one of these entities makes the bridge act as if the button was pressed; it does not report physical presses.
If you paired several devices, add them all in the app first, then reload once.
Moving a Pico Paired Directly to a Dimmer
A Pico paired straight to a dimmer, without the bridge, does not exist in the bridge, so Home Assistant cannot see it. The dimmer stores that pairing, not the Pico, so resetting the Pico alone does not remove it.
- Factory reset the dimmer or switch the Pico controls. If that dimmer was already on the bridge,
the reset removes it from the bridge too:
- Quickly triple tap the top button and hold it.
- Release it as soon as the LED starts blinking. Do not wait for the blinking to stop.
- Immediately triple tap the top button again, without holding. The LED blinks again, more slowly.
- The lights it controls turn on and off three times when the reset succeeds. If they do not, repeat the steps.
- Add the dimmer through the app as described in Step 1 .
- Add the Pico through the app the same way, and choose which lights it controls.
Troubleshooting
If a device does not pair or does not appear:
- The app does not detect the device after about 30 seconds. Factory reset the device according to its manual, then try again. Move the bridge closer if the device is far away.
- The device works in the app but not in Home Assistant. Reload the integration ( Step 4 ). If it is still missing, restart Home Assistant.
- The device shows as unavailable. Check that it responds in the Lutron app first. If it does not, the problem is between the device and the bridge (range or power), not Home Assistant.
- A Pico press does nothing in Home Assistant. Confirm the Pico was added through the bridge, not paired directly to a dimmer.
