Sonos Integration Setup

Sonos speakers need no pairing in Home Assistant: set them up in the Sonos app and Home Assistant detects them on the local network.

Sonos Audio Media Multi-Room Integrations Setup

Sonos speakers do not need to be paired with Home Assistant. Once a speaker is set up in the Sonos app, Home Assistant detects it on the local network through the built-in Sonos integration. No IP address or cloud account is needed.

Set Up the Speakers in the Sonos App

Add each speaker to the Sonos system with the Sonos app and assign it to a room. Do any bonding there too: stereo pairs, surround speakers, and subwoofers. A bonded set appears in Home Assistant as a single room.

Confirm the Speakers in Home Assistant

  1. Go to Settings > Devices & Services.
  2. The first time, Sonos appears under Discovered. Select it and confirm.

One Sonos entry covers the whole system. Each room appears as a media player for playback, volume, and grouping, with extra controls for sound settings, alarms, and home theater or battery features depending on the model.

Speakers added to the Sonos app later appear in Home Assistant on their own. There is nothing to do in Home Assistant.

If a Speaker Does Not Appear

  1. Check the Sonos app. The speaker must play music there first. If it does not, fix the problem in the Sonos app before troubleshooting Home Assistant.
  2. Check UPnP. Home Assistant needs UPnP to talk to the speakers. In the Sonos app, go to Account > Privacy and Security > UPnP and make sure it is on. Without it, setup fails with a 403 Client Error: Forbidden error.
  3. Check the network. Detection works when the speakers and Home Assistant share a subnet. Across VLANs, allow discovery traffic and these ports:
    • TCP 1400 from Home Assistant to the speakers, for control and setup.
    • TCP 1400 from the speakers to Home Assistant, for live updates. If it is blocked, the integration falls back to slow polling and shows a warning. Home Assistant uses a nearby port if 1400 is already taken on its side.
    • TCP 1443 from Home Assistant to the speakers, for announcements and text to speech.
  4. Reload the integration. Open Settings > Devices & Services > Sonos and select Reload from the menu (⋮).
