Set up the Thread integration in Home Assistant and verify that your Thread network is ready for Matter over Thread devices.

Thread Matter Home Assistant Integrations Setup

Use this guide after OpenThread Border Router is installed and your Thread radio is connected. This guide focuses on the Thread integration itself and how to confirm that your Home Assistant server is ready for Matter over Thread devices.

Before You Start

Before setting up the Thread integration, confirm:

  1. OpenThread Border Router is installed and running.
  2. Your Thread adapter is selected correctly in the OpenThread Border Router app.
  3. The app logs do not show repeated serial or startup errors.
  4. You have the Home Assistant Companion App available if you plan to commission Matter over Thread devices from your phone.

Open the Thread Integration

  1. Open your Home Assistant instance.
  2. Go to Settings > Devices & Services.
  3. Look for the Thread integration.
  4. If it appears automatically, open it.
  5. If it does not appear automatically, select Add Integration and search for Thread.

Confirm the Thread Network

  1. Open the Thread integration.
  2. Select Configure if needed.
  3. Confirm that a Thread network appears in the overview.
  4. If Home Assistant is your first Thread network, make sure the Home Assistant Thread network is marked as the preferred network.
  5. If the home already has an Apple or Google Thread network, import those credentials first and make that network preferred before pairing devices.

If No Thread Network Appears

If the Thread integration opens but does not show a network:

  1. Go back to Settings > Apps > OpenThread Border Router.
  2. Recheck the selected adapter.
  3. Recheck the configured baud rate.
  4. Restart the OpenThread Border Router app.
  5. Check the app logs again.
  6. Return to the Thread integration and refresh the view.

Before You Pair Matter over Thread Devices

Before pairing Matter over Thread devices, confirm:

  • A Thread network appears in the Thread integration.
  • The correct network is marked as preferred.
  • OpenThread Border Router is running.
  • Your phone is ready to act as the Matter over Thread commissioner.
  • The device’s Matter QR code or setup code is available.
