Pairing Zooz Devices

Add Zooz Z-Wave switches, relays, plugs, and sensors to Home Assistant with SmartStart, plus the button sequences for manual inclusion, exclusion, and factory reset on each model.

Zooz Z-Wave Pairing Inclusion SmartStart Devices

Zooz devices join Home Assistant through the Z-Wave JS integration. Every current Zooz 800-series device supports SmartStart: scan its QR code, power it on, and it joins the network by itself. Use the button sequences below only when SmartStart is not an option.

Use this guide after completing the Z-Wave Protocol Setup . For the general inclusion flow and S2 security, see Pairing Z-Wave Devices .

Before You Start

  1. The Z-Wave JS integration is running and shows the controller as online.
  2. You have the device in hand, or a photo of its QR code. Once a switch is in the wall or a sensor is mounted, the code can be hard to reach.

Add a Device with SmartStart

  1. Keep the device unpowered: leave the breaker off, the plug unplugged, or the battery tab in.
  2. In Home Assistant, go to Settings > Devices & Services > Z-Wave and select Add Device.
  3. Scan the QR code on the device (see the table below for where it is printed).
  4. Power the device. It joins the network and completes S2 security without any button press.

Battery sensors can take up to 10 minutes to appear.

Every Zooz model in this guide supports Z-Wave Long Range, which reaches devices far from the controller without relying on the mesh. When your controller supports it too, Home Assistant asks after the scan whether to add the device with Long Range or Mesh. Choose Long Range for devices at the edge of the property, such as an outdoor motion sensor. Long Range is only available through SmartStart.

Manual Inclusion and Exclusion

Start Add Device (or Remove Device) in Home Assistant first, then press the device’s buttons as shown.

If a device does not respond, exclude it first with its removal sequence, then try adding it again. For the ZEN34, Zooz suggests clicking the upper paddle 7 or 8 times instead of 6.

Choose the Power Source Before Pairing

The ZSE11 Q Sensor and the ZSE70 Outdoor Motion Sensor run on either batteries or wired power, and they pair differently on each. On wired power they join as repeaters and stay awake. If you pair one on wired power and then switch it to batteries, the batteries drain in about two days. Pair the sensor on the power source it will use in daily life.

Factory Reset

Reset a device when it was used on another network or when inclusion keeps failing. A reset clears its settings and network data. Exclude it from Home Assistant first if it is still listed there.

Wake Up Battery Devices

Battery devices sleep most of the time, so new settings from Home Assistant only reach them when they wake up. To apply a change right away, wake the device:

  • ZEN34 Remote Switch: click the upper paddle 7 times. The LED stays blue while it is awake.
  • ZSE11 Q Sensor: hold the Z-Wave button for 3 seconds.
  • ZSE41, ZSE42, ZSE44 XS sensors: click the Z-Wave button 4 times. The sensor stays awake for 1 minute.
  • ZSE70 Outdoor Motion Sensor: click the Z-Wave button once. It stays awake for 10 seconds.
