Companion-App Home Assistant Matter Thread Mobile Setup

Use this guide after your Home Assistant Companion App is installed and your Thread network is ready. The goal is to make your phone ready to commission Matter over Thread devices during setup.

Before You Start

Before you begin, confirm:

  1. You have already finished Home Assistant Companion App Setup .
  2. OpenThread Border Router is installed and running.
  3. The Thread integration in Home Assistant shows an available Thread network.
  4. Bluetooth is enabled on your phone.
  5. You are signed in to the correct Home Assistant server in the app.

Android Setup

  1. Open the Home Assistant Companion App.
  2. Go to Settings > Companion App > Troubleshooting.
  3. Select Sync Thread credentials.
  4. Follow the prompts until Android confirms the Thread credentials were added to the phone.
  5. Leave the Home Assistant Companion App installed and keep Bluetooth enabled for later commissioning.

iPhone Setup

  1. Open your Home Assistant server.
  2. Go to Settings > Devices & Services.
  3. Open the Thread integration.
  4. Select Configure under Services.
  5. Select Send credentials to phone.
  6. Follow the prompts on the iPhone until it confirms the Thread credentials were added.
  7. Leave the Home Assistant Companion App installed and keep Bluetooth enabled for later commissioning.

Verify That Your Phone Is Ready

Before attempting to add a Matter over Thread device, confirm:

  • The Home Assistant Companion App is still signed in.
  • Your phone has received the Thread credentials.
  • Bluetooth is enabled.
  • The device’s Matter QR code or setup code is available.
  • Your Home Assistant server is the one you want to use during commissioning.

If Commissioning Does Not Start Correctly

If your phone does not offer the expected Matter over Thread setup flow:

  1. Confirm the Thread integration still shows a working network.
  2. Repeat the credential sync steps for your phone.
  3. Confirm the Home Assistant Companion App is connected to the correct server.
  4. Confirm Bluetooth permissions are still enabled for the app.
  5. Return to your Matter setup flow and try again.
