Device Category Requirements

Use this article to check the installation requirements for a specific device by its device category during on-site work.

Use these requirements alongside the project installation plan, manufacturer instructions, and the main installer guide to complete your work.

How to use this article

Before finalizing a device installation:

1. Confirm the device category in the installation plan.
2. Review the matching category below.
3. Follow the manufacturer installation instructions and local code requirements.
4. Confirm the device is safe, functional, and ready for the customer.
5. Escalate to a Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer if the installation is blocked or the device cannot be safely completed.

Thermostats

• Confirm the thermostat is compatible with the available HVAC wiring using the manufacturer’s installation guide.
• Confirm the HVAC system powers on correctly and that all required functions work.
• Priority device. This device must be installed and working before customer walkthrough.

Smart Locks

• Confirm the lock fits the door correctly and that mechanical alignment is smooth before final tightening.
• Confirm the latch, strike, lock, and unlock functions work correctly after installation.
• Priority device. This device must be installed and working before customer walkthrough.

Cameras

• Mount the camera securely with the correct viewing angle and stable power or network connection.
• Confirm the camera location matches the installation plan and covers the intended area.

Lights

• Confirm the light, fixture, or bulb type is compatible with the planned control method (Ex: Switch vs Dimmer).

Shades

• Confirm that the shades are the correct length and width before starting install.
• Confirm brackets are level, secure, and aligned before final mounting.
• Confirm the shade can travel fully without rubbing, binding, or hitting nearby trim.

Power Monitoring

• Confirm the monitoring hardware is installed on the correct circuit, device, or panel location.
• Confirm all covers, enclosures, and terminations are safely reinstalled after setup.
• Follow all local electrical and NEC codes.

Water Monitoring

• Install the sensor or probe where water is most likely to collect first.
• Confirm the sensor cable, probe, or body is secured so it will not be kicked, moved, or disconnected easily.

Smoke and CO Detection

• Follow manufacturer instructions and all local code requirements for placement and installation.
• Make sure the detectors are working by using the test button if available.

Noise Monitoring

• Avoid placing the device directly beside vents, speakers, or other sources of constant false noise.

Motion Sensors

• Install the sensor at the manufacturer-recommended height and angle.
• Avoid placing the sensor where vents, direct sunlight, glass reflections, or traffic outside the intended area may cause false triggers.

Environmental Sensors

• Install the sensor away from direct sunlight, vents, or appliances that could skew readings unless otherwise noted.

Voice Assistants

• Place the device near reliable power and network coverage.
• Avoid placing the device where background noise, enclosed shelves, or distance will reduce microphone performance.

Smart Plugs and Outlets

• Confirm the outlet or plug can be installed without blocking required adjacent outlets or switches.

Garage Door Controllers

• Confirm the controller is mounted securely and wired according to the manufacturer guide.
• Confirm door safety features remain intact and the door operates safely after installation.
• Priority device. This device must be installed and working before customer walkthrough.

HVAC+

• Confirm all HVAC-related devices are installed in the correct zones and locations.
• Confirm the system operates safely and that required heating, cooling, fan, and schedule functions are working.
• Priority device. This device must be installed and working before customer walkthrough.

Irrigation and Gardening

• Confirm the installation protects the device from water intrusion and that any exposed wiring is secured.
• Confirm that the device can be connected to the SeloraBox through its connection type or communication protocol at the installation location.

Ovens and Cook Tops

• Follow all manufacturer and code requirements for electrical connection, clearances, and safe installation.
• Confirm the appliance is installed safely and that basic operation is working before handoff.
• If a gas oven or cook top is used, check for gas leaks with a gas detector.
• Priority device. This device must be installed and working before customer walkthrough.

EV Chargers

• Follow all manufacturer and code requirements for mounting, circuit sizing, wiring, and breaker protection.
• Confirm the charger is mounted securely and that basic charging operation is working.

Fans

• If it is a ceiling fan, confirm that the electrical box is rated for ceiling-fan use.
• Confirm the fan is mounted securely and balanced correctly.
• Confirm fan speed control, direction, and any light-kit functions work safely after installation.

Dishwashers

• Start a cycle while continuing the install so the appliance can be observed during operation.
• Confirm the appliance is level, connected correctly, and free from leaks.
• Priority device. This device must be installed and working before customer walkthrough.

Vacuums

• Place the dock where the vacuum can both start a cleaning task and return to the dock without obstruction.

Washer and Dryers

• Start a cycle while continuing the install so the appliance can be observed during operation.
• Confirm the appliance is connected correctly and check for leaks, balance, vibration, and stability.
• Priority device. This device must be installed and working before customer walkthrough.

Smart Switches

• Turn the breaker off before starting any switch installation work.
• Follow all local electrical and NEC codes.
• Confirm the available wires match the manufacturer’s installation guide before wiring the device.
• If the switch uses a communication protocol, do not fully install it into the electrical box until integration is complete.
