Device Integration Support

Installer-facing guidance for supporting device integration work led by a Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer.

Installer Integration Support Home Assistant Communication-Protocols

Use this article during the device integration phase of a project’s installation after new devices have been installed and a Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer is ready to bring them online.

How to Use This Article

During this stage, a Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer leads the integration process in the SeloraBox Home Assistant OS.

As the installer, your job is to support that work by helping with physical access, device information, pairing mode, and basic device handling while the Customer Support Engineer completes the actual integration steps.

Before Integration Starts

Before this stage begins, confirm:

  1. The new devices have been installed in the correct locations.
  2. The SeloraBox is online and available.
  3. A Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer has been called using the number listed in the project’s Installation Plan.
  4. The customer is available if account login, MFA, or vendor credentials may be required.

Installer Responsibilities During Integration

Your role during integration may include:

  • Locating information on physical devices.
  • Putting devices into pairing, inclusion, or commissioning mode.
  • Confirming device model details, labels, QR codes, and serial information when needed.
  • Assisting with physical access to devices during setup and testing.
  • Power-cycling, resetting, or waking devices when requested by a Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer.

Together with a Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer, you will work through the Installation Plan to help bring both newly installed and any existing devices online.

When the Customer Is Needed

The customer should be available during this step only when they may need to:

  • Create manufacturer accounts.
  • Enter credentials.
  • Approve logins.
  • Complete MFA.
  • Assist with vendor-specific setup flows.

Smart Devices and How They Connect to SeloraBox

Direct Home Assistant OS Integrations

Direct Home Assistant OS integrations connect devices or services through Home Assistant itself rather than through a separate local communication protocol such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter.

These integrations are usually added through Settings > Devices & Services > Add Integration in Home Assistant. They may connect through the local network, a vendor account, or a device IP address depending on the manufacturer and integration type.

A Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer leads this work, and the installer may be asked to help locate device labels, confirm IP addresses, or assist with physical access during setup.

Communication Protocol Integrations

Communication protocol devices connect directly to the SeloraBox through a local smart home radio instead of through only a standard Home Assistant integration.

If a device in the Installation Plan uses a communication protocol, the correct radio receiver should already be connected during SeloraBox setup.

These devices are integrated through protocols such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter. Because these integrations often require the device to be placed into pairing, inclusion, or commissioning mode, they should be installed one at a time and coordinated with a Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer as each device comes online.

Zigbee

Zigbee is a low-power mesh protocol commonly used for sensors, locks, plugs, switches, and lighting devices.

The installer may need to power on the device, reset it, or place it into pairing mode before the Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer adds it in Home Assistant. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact reset and pairing process.

Z-Wave

Z-Wave is another low-power mesh protocol commonly used for locks, switches, sensors, and other residential smart home automation hardware.

The installer may need to power on the device, place it into inclusion mode, or wake a battery-powered device during setup. Some newer Z-Wave devices include a QR code used for SmartStart provisioning. When present, capture that QR code so a Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer can use it during setup.

Matter

Matter is a newer smart home standard designed to simplify local device interoperability across platforms. Some Matter devices may still require vendor account setup, mobile app approval, or customer credential steps during install.

These devices also include a Matter pairing code or QR code that will be used during setup. Capture the code from the manufacturer packaging or the device itself so it is available during integration and documentation.

When to Escalate Immediately

Escalate to a Selora Homes Customer Support Engineer right away when:

  • A device cannot be placed into pairing, inclusion, or commissioning mode.
  • A device needs to stay partially disassembled for setup.
  • The wrong model, QR code, or hardware version appears to be on-site.
  • A customer login, vendor account, or MFA step blocks progress.
  • A reset, power cycle, or reconnection step does not work after reasonable attempts.
