Working at Selora Homes
Remote-First Culture
Selora Homes is a fully remote company. Our team members work from across the United States, collaborating asynchronously and meeting regularly via video calls.
Benefits of Remote Work:
- Work from anywhere in the US
- No commute, more time for life
- Flexibility to work when you’re most productive
- Access to talent regardless of location
Async by Default
We’re not just remote-first, we’re async by default. This means written communication and documentation are our primary modes of collaboration.
How We Work Asynchronously:
- Issues & Epics First: We use GitLab issues and epics as our default communication tool for planning, discussion, and decision-making
- No Internal Email: We don’t use email for internal communication - everything happens in GitLab or Slack
- Meetings Require Agendas: When meetings are necessary, they must have an agenda populated in advance
- Documentation Over Discussion: We document decisions and context so everyone can stay informed on their own schedule
Communication Escalation Path:
We escalate through communication channels based on urgency or when too many back-and-forth exchanges occur:
- GitLab Issues: Default for planning, feature discussions, and decisions (asynchronous)
- Slack: When you need quicker feedback or the issue thread becomes too long
- Zoom Meetings: When urgency is high or real-time discussion would resolve things faster
Why Async?
- Flexibility: Work when you’re most productive, not just when others are online
- Inclusivity: Everyone has time to think and contribute, not just the fastest typers
- Documentation: Written communication creates a searchable record of decisions
- Deep Work: Fewer interruptions means more focused, high-quality work time
Typical Work Week
While we value flexibility, here’s what a typical week might look like:
Monday: Team standup, planning for the week ahead
Tuesday-Thursday: Deep work time, team collaboration, customer meetings
Friday: Wrap up week, document learnings, async updates
Team Rituals
Daily Standups (Async): Quick updates on Slack about what you’re working on
Weekly Team Meetings: Video call to sync on priorities and blockers
Monthly All-Hands: Full company updates and discussions
Quarterly Planning: Strategic planning and OKR setting
Tools We Use
- Slack: Primary communication tool
- Zoom: Video meetings
- GitLab: Code, documentation, and project management
- CircleBack: Meeting action items and follow-ups
- 1Password: Password management and secrets sharing
