SPAN & Home Assistant
The SPAN Panel integration is a community project, installed through HACS, that connects Home Assistant to the SPAN Panel MAIN 32. It talks to the panel over the local network through SPAN’s own API, which SPAN publishes as a public beta, and the panel pushes every change as it happens instead of being polled.
Every circuit reports its power and energy, and the circuits the homeowner can switch get an on/off control and a backup priority. The whole home’s grid import and export feed the Home Assistant energy dashboard, and solar and battery power come through when they are installed. The integration also adds its own dashboard to the sidebar with a live view of every circuit.

How SPAN Works with Home Assistant
Getting SPAN connected to Home Assistant and running reliably.
Connect your meters
Add SPAN through the integrations panel. Power meters, solar inverters, and battery systems appear as sensor entities with real-time readings.
Energy dashboard
Configure the Home Assistant energy dashboard to display SPAN data alongside other sources. See production, consumption, and grid exchange in one view.
Cost-optimized automation
Build automations that respond to SPAN energy data. Run appliances during peak solar production, charge batteries during off-peak rates, or alert when consumption spikes.
Common SPAN Issues
The problems installers run into with SPAN and Home Assistant — and how a managed setup prevents them.
Only the MAIN 32 connects
SPAN's API runs on the SPAN Panel MAIN 32 only. SPAN plans to bring it to the MAIN 16, MAIN 40, MLO 24, and MLO 48, but those panels cannot join Home Assistant yet.
Pairing needs the passphrase or the door
Pairing asks for the panel passphrase from the SPAN app, or for the panel door to be opened and closed three times. The panel also needs current firmware before the integration will connect.
Automations cannot switch circuits at first
A new install refuses circuit commands that come from an automation rather than a logged-in person. Turn on control without a logged-in user in the integration's options if a recipe has to switch circuits.
Why installers choose managed SPAN setups
- Panel model and firmware checked before the visit
- Circuit names matched to rooms and appliances in Home Assistant
- Circuit control limited to the circuits a recipe actually needs
- Backup priorities left to the panel, as SPAN recommends
